Chapter 12

May 4, 2015 – Greg

The Bennett Group was exactly how Greg imagined it to be—ten floors of chrome and glass overlooking Biscayne Bay. It wasn’t the most imposing building on the block unless you knew what was inside. Though he was a born introvert, after spending a week locked in the apartment Alaric had secured for him, Greg was beyond ready to interact with people. Gene and Ty thought it best that he stay out of sight for a while, just to make sure no one was sniffing around the area.

Greg had no problem admitting that they knew all that cloak and dagger shit better than him and settled in to do the research Gene didn’t want him to do in Tampa. Alaric hadn’t been thrilled with that because of security concerns, but they’d come to an agreement so he wouldn’t go stir crazy waiting to be put back into play. The problem wasn’t the work or even being alone, it was that memories of Gene were all over the apartment. He couldn’t sleep because he missed that big body next to his, couldn’t lie on the couch without picturing them snuggled up together, and he definitely couldn’t cook. Just looking at the kitchen island made him hard. Cooking on it would probably be an orgasmic experience and he was done doing that alone.

As promised, Gene called multiple times a day to keep him updated on the case and they were back to their usual middle of the night sex calls. The familiarity of it should have been comforting, but it only made him long for the real thing and he could hear the same frustration in Gene’s voice. Greg knew that was a dangerous distraction for Gene to have and yet, he didn’t know how to fix it.

Showing up in Fort Myers would be suicide and make him a liability to the case, so that was out of the question. Now that the meeting with Cesar and Carlos had gone down, Gene couldn’t risk sneaking away to see him, so that wasn’t an option either. All they had was a phone line to hold them together and Greg could only pray it would be enough the second time around.

“Are you okay?” Greg blinked and realized he’d been standing just outside the doors of the building, lost in his own head again. He really needed to get that habit under control.

“Sorry, was I blocking your way?” Embarrassed at having been caught daydreaming, Greg immediately started to move out of the way.

“Greg, right?” Hearing his name made Greg take a real look at the man who’d interrupted his thoughts. Of course he’d make a fool of himself in front of Chase Malone. Those mismatched eyes twinkled in amusement and Greg felt his cheeks heat in response. “It’s nice to finally meet you in person.”

“Chase, yes, I’m sorry. My head was…” in Fort Myers. Needing to get this introduction turned around, he offered his hand in greeting. “It’s really good to meet you too.
